Janice Hardy: I Dreamt a Cardboard Rocket Poem

I dreamt a cardboard rocket ...

a poem by Janice Hardy, Community College Childcare

I dreamt a cardboard rocket all shiny, light and bright,
I made it from tin foil, saucepans lids and all things light
It needed to be shiny, light and bright so I could see the way,
As I was taking off at night and not during the day.

I dreamt a cardboard rocket would take me to the moon
Packed my things all ready and hoped to leave real soon.
I packed my cup and plate and my favourite spoon
Then sat and waited for a full moon.

I sat by my cardboard rocket and waited and waited but the full moon did not appear
It felt like I waited ages, about a year.
Then at last the moon appeared all shiny round and bright
And me and my cardboard rocket could take off into the night

I dreamt my cardboard rocket would take me to the moon
But couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing my family soon
I put all my precious things inside and said my goodbyes
I settled down inside for lift off then tears filled my eyes

I rushed downstairs in tears to see my Mum and Dad
I told them I could not bear to leave them that it would make me sad
They told me not to cry and that they would come too
So Mum and Dad and I settled into my cardboard rocket and as we soared through the night sky and saw the moon, I sighed and thought Ahhh dreams can come true......
